About

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition is a fundamental biological process whereby epithelial cells lose their polarity and cell-cell adhesion and acquire migratory and invasive properties characteristic of mesenchymal cells. This concept investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms that drive this reversible phenotypic switch, which is characterized by altered gene expression, cytoskeletal rearrangement, and degradation of the extracellular matrix. Its significance lies in its critical roles in embryonic development, tissue regeneration, and various pathological conditions, most notably the progression of cancer metastasis and fibrosis.
